A betrayed knight is reincarnated into the body of a frail noblewoman of the enemy empire, and must navigate high-society life, politics, and an arranged marriage while secretly uncovering the truths of her past life’s demise.

Betrayal. Reincarnation. A slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance.

“When Estelle is killed by the very subordinate she once trusted, her life as a loyal knight of the Kingdom of Ersha comes to a sudden end. But to her surprise, she wakes up three years later in the body of Lucifela Aydin, the spoiled daughter of a wealthy count in the enemy empire of Jansgar. Thrust into a world of noble banquets, court politics, and an unwanted engagement to Zedekiah Heint—the duke she once crossed swords with—Estelle is compelled to live as a noblewoman among those who destroyed her homeland. Determined to uncover the truth behind Ersha’s downfall and her own betrayal, Estelle seizes the second chance to find the traitors, reunite with the survivors, and protect what little remains of her kingdom. To do so, she will live as Lucifela!”— Publisher’s synopsis

The Physical Edition

I usually read manhwa on my phone in a vertical format, so this was my first time experiencing a physical copy of a manhwa in a side-by-side layout. Thank you to the publisher, Crossed Hearts, for sending me a copy to review.

This official English edition from Crossed Hearts covers Chapters 1-17 across 378 full-colour pages. It is printed on high-quality and vibrant paper that has a good weight to it in my hands, feeling like something premium. This edition includes customizable journal pages after almost every chapter (a creative and practical way to fill up blank pages), French flaps (adds to the premium reading experience), an exclusive 3-page side story by the illustrator, Ink., and a special illustration of Lucifela.

It also includes exclusive, print-only illustrations of Dukes Zedekiah and Louis on foldouts/extendable pages. I didn’t know about these foldouts at first and was confused as to why my pages looked a bit weird, almost as if they were cut wrongly (I thought I had a misprinted edition). Don’t be like me and almost tear apart the illustrations, especially given how STUNNING they are.

The Manhwa Trifecta: Story, Character & Artwork

Story

The main plot of this volume involves the two rivalling male leads, Dukes Zedekiah and Louis, solving the case of “The Butcher”—a serial killer who targets young women, leaving behind messages written in blood at his crime scenes. At the same time, Estelle is adjusting to her new life as Lucifela. One of Estelle’s main challenges she faces in this volume is navigating the differences—physically and socially—between her old and new life.

As Estelle, she defied gender norms by becoming a physically and mentally strong, highly respected knight (and the only female one at that) amongst her comrades; Lucifela is frail of both body and mind, and dutifully fulfills the social roles of what is expected of women in their realm: to be pretty but remain silent especially regarding political and external affairs, to engage at parties, and to get married off to someone of status for the benefit of her own family, among other things. When a rumour spreads that The Butcher is one of Estelle’s former subordinates, she decides to take things into her own hands and investigate on her own, which ends up getting her caught in the murderer’s schemes.

The story starts off a bit slow, but the pacing picks up and beings to unfold in the second half. Readers also get a glimpse into who Lucifela was before Estelle took over her body, and the secrets that she held. A lot of characters are introduced in this opening volume, many who will undoubtedly play a larger role in later volumes, their backstories further explored.

Character

I love a strong female main character who takes things into her own hands and knows her own worth, so I’m looking forward to see where Estelle/Lucifela’s story goes, including her enemies-to-lovers relationship with Duke Zedekiah. If you know me, you also know that I love a tsundere-type male character: someone who seems cold and standoffish on the outside, but is actually very warm and caring on the inside. Zedekiah has yet to attract me like other male leads, but we’re only on the first volume.. let’s see if he’ll grow on me.

As for Duke Louis, he’s a bit of an enigma to me. Other than being Zedekiah’s rival, we don’t know much about him (yet!).. but maybe for good reason, given the cliffhanger at the end of the volume. I’m also curious to know more about the princes: second prince Eozif and crown prince Temir (aka Lucifela’s former lover *grab my tea*).

Artwork

As someone who is not a trained artist, I don’t have the breadth and depth of knowledge to critique the art, so this is purely based on my own observations and feelings. The first thing about the artwork that caught my attention was the character colour-coding: a deep warm purple for Lucifela, hints of gold for Estelle, an earthly dark turquoise for Zedekiah, and pale lavender for Louis.

Overall, the art is very beautiful, especially in scenes where the light creates shimmering, iridescent reflections. However, it is not very consistent, sometimes looking slightly rushed or “off” with thicker and bolder lines, less refined detailing, and awkward perspectives. The cover itself is STUNNING (it was definitely a factor in my wanting to read this manhwa).
